Community leaders from Siyatemba in Mpumalanga on Monday warned of more violent protests if the local mayor did not resign.

They told the deputy ministers of Home Affairs and Justice that officials did not respond properly to their service delivery demands.

Dozens of community members, gathered at the Balfour Town Hall, spoke passionately as they told the deputy ministers and MECs about the problems plugging their township.

They said residents were deeply traumatised by what they described as severe force used by police during last week’s protests.

They reiterated attacks on Somali businessmen were not fuelled by xenophobia but were carried out by criminals who took advantage of the situation.

Some of the leaders here say their problems would be resolved if they are incorporated into Gauteng.
