President Mohamud travels to Southwest ahead of reconciliation meeting

    Baidoa (HOL) - Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is expected to travel to Badioa, the interim administrative capital of South West regional state On Tuesday.

    President Mohamud will attend the opening of the South West reconciliation meeting in Baidoa, which is scheduled to begin in the next few days.

    President Mohamud will hold preliminary meetings with President Laftagaren and Southwest state opposition members to resolve their regional election dispute.

    Security in Baidoa was beefed up as Lower House Speaker Sheikh Adan Mohamed Nur Madobe and members of the federal government officials arrived in Baidoa on Monday to coordinate the meeting.

    The South West Reconciliation meeting, which was spearheaded by the Speaker of the Parliament, Sheikh Adan Madobe, will discuss the turbulent political situation in Southwest State, especially the controversy surrounding the upcoming elections.

    A meeting scheduled for January 5 was postponed for unknown reasons.

    Southwest PresidentAbdiaziz Laftagareen and the opposition candidates are now locked in a political impasse over the legality of his term extension.

    On December 23, at least ten people were killed in a clash between Southwest state security forces and the opposition candidate's militia in Baidoa. The gun battle broke out at the home of former federal finance minister Mohamed Adan Ibrahim Fargeti, where the opposition-loyal militia had gathered.
