Merca (HOL) - Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamed extended his condolences and outrage over the killing of the mayor of Merca town Abdullahi Ali Axmed Wafow, who died in a suicide bombing in the town on Wednesday.

"Abdullahi Ali Ahmed was a citizen who sacrificed his life for the government and the country's development. I pray Allah to give all those who were martyred in bombings a place in Jannatul Firdowsa and to grant their loved ones and the Somali people patience and faith, the President, stated in a statement.

At least 20 people, including the mayor of Merca town Abdullahi Ali Wafow, were killed in two explosions in the Lower Shabelle region on Wednesday.

The first attack was a suicide bombing that targeted officials in Merca town, killing at least 13 people, including the mayor, while wounding many people.

The second attack was a landmine explosion that rocked a busy livestock market in Afgoye town, killing seven people and wounding more than 14 others.

The Islamist insurgency group al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the deadly attack in Merca.

President Mohamud reiterated his government's commitment to a real war against terrorist groups.
