Mogadishu (HOL) - Somali police in Mogadishu have arrested a young man in connection with a sexual assault of a 20-year-old girl in Gedo region’s Bardhere district.
Two other men are wanted for the assault, which was captured on film by the culprits.
The video posted on social media showed one man holding the victim down while another attempts to rape her. A third suspect is recording the entire assault.
The community was outraged by the video, and police were asked to bring the three accused young men to justice.
Somali Police Force spokesman Sadiq Aden Ali Doodishe told the media on Sunday that one of the suspects, Mohamed Ali Mohamed, was apprehended by security forces in Mogadishu after fleeing from Bardhere.
"The security forces arrested one of the three youths who assaulted the young girl. The attackers filmed their crime and shared it on social media. We are actively looking for the two other suspects," he said.
Doodishe said the arrest came as a result of cooperation between police in Bardhere and Mogadishu. After receiving crucial information about the suspect’s identity and whereabouts, police were able to locate him and make the arrest.
The Somali Police spokesperson said that the suspect would be handed over to authorities so that the victim, currently in the Gedo region, can receive justice.
