Hormuud promises to build sustainable structures after winning inaugural radio spectrum license

Monday December 26, 2022

Mogadishu (HOL) - Hormuud has promised to build sustainable structures to support Somalia's digital growth after being awarded Somalia’s first radio spectrum license, granting the right to use various frequency bands regulated by the National Communications Authority (NCA).

The radio spectrum is a range of frequencies used for communication, such as radio and television broadcasts, mobile phone transmissions, and wireless internet. Individuals and organizations must get a licence from the government or a regulatory body to utilize the radio spectrum.

Hormuud won the rights to use frequency bands including 700 MHz, 800 MHz, 900 MHz, 1.8 GHz, 2.1 GHz, 2.3 GHz, 2.6 GHz, and 3.5 GHz.

In a press statement released on Sunday, Hormuud said the license would help grow Somalia's technological sector while bringing in money for the government.

"As the license recipient, we continue to support the government's digital initiatives. This license will further Somalia's development and build sustainable structures to support the nation's growth."

"We are proud to be a recipient of this license and, as Somalia's largest telecoms provider, pleased to be opening up a new source of revenue for the government."

Typically, obtaining a radio spectrum license is a competitive process, as specific frequencies are often limited in a given geographic area. Radio spectrum licenses are usually granted for a fixed period, after which the license holder must renew them. To obtain a license, applicants must typically submit a proposal to the relevant regulatory agency outlining how they plan to use the frequencies and demonstrating that their proposed use is in the public interest.

License holders must pay fees to the regulatory agency to use the frequencies.

"We believe that the spectrum license is the first step in strengthening private-public partnerships and building a solid regulatory environment. It also creates an opportunity to raise local standards and form a more competitive market within the telecoms industry. This marks a significant economic growth milestone from a post-conflict state to a developing nation."
