Performing in front of thousands of soccer supporters at a Durban fan fest yesterday, the Somalia-born hip-hop artist said: “I am proud to be from this continent”, adding that it was a “privilege” to perform his music.
Speaking to journalists after his show, K’naan said that the way Africa has hosted the World Cup should be a lesson to the rest of the world. “It has spoilt the historical Western context (of Africa)? it has helped people get over stereotypes.’’
Heralded as the unofficial World Cup song, K’naan’s ‘Wavin Flag’ track has been No 1in 17 countries and has been the most played song in South Africa for three consecutive weeks.
“I have enjoyed the way the song affects people. It’s awkward walking down the street or being at a restaurant and having people break out into ‘Wavin Flag’, it’s a constant musical,” he said.
K’naan refused to comment on his song having overtaken Shakira’s official World Cup song ‘Waka Waka’ in popularity, saying only that, “in the streets of Soweto they are singing ‘Wavin Flag’.’’
