(APA)Botswana will not be able to send troops to beef-up those under the African Union (AU) in the troubled East African country of Somalia, Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation minister Phandu Skelemani told reporters on Friday in Gaborone.

Phandu Skelemani told reporters that Botswana government will not be able to contribute troops to the AU Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) due to resource constraints and the amount of work that soldiers have to do in the country.

“Botswana will however assist by providing aircrafts to support peacekeeping operations in Somalia,” he said.

Botswana’s support for the peacekeeping initiative in Somalia follows the decision of the 15th AU summit in Kampala that African states should increase its troops in Somalia after al-Qaida-linked militants claimed responsibility for the bombings that killed 76 people watching Soccer World Cup Final in Kampala, Uganda on 11 July.

Uganda has contributed half of the 6000 AMISOM troops to bolster a government failing to cope with the insurgents.
