An Eritrean diplomat deported from Kenya last month for security reasons has found his way back using another passport.

According to police investigations, the diplomat flew to Kenya through Ethiopia and has been using the new identity to live in Nairobi undetected.

He was even issued with a work permit by the Immigration department. Officers from the anti-terrorism police unit are investigating the matter.

On Tuesday, police went to court seeking permission to detain the diplomat as they await new deportation orders from the government.

When he was kicked out on August 8, the government did not give details of his deportation, and only cited “security reasons,” a diplomatic jargon for involvement in activities that undermine the host country.

It was not clear what the man was doing in Kenya, but police sources told the Nation that he had possible links to agents of the al-Shabaab terror group fighting Somali government forces.

Three Eritreans have been deported from Kenya in as many months but the country’s ambassador to Kenya, Mr Salih Omar Abdu, said none of its government officials and staff had been deported.

Immigration ministry public communications officer E. Njeru told the Nation he was not aware of the return of any Eritrean after being deported.

Somali crisis

United States secretary of State Hillary Clinton criticised Eritrea for its involvement in the Somali crisis.

Separately, 33 Somalis were arrested on Tuesday for entering Kenya illegally.

They were travelling in two vehicles from Garissa to Mombasa when police intercepted them.

Ijara district police boss Rems Warui said the foreigners had entered the country at the Liboi border point. They are being held at Masalani police station.
