An interview survey indicates that many young people of immigrant backgrounds find Finland a racist and prejudiced country.
Young adults with a Somali background believe that they do not have the career opportunities offered to the mainstream population. Those from Russian and Estonian backgrounds, on the other hand, often believe in their chances on the job market.
Moving elsewhere seems a relatively easy option for the young people, as they speak several languages and know several cultures. They also have relatives and friends scattered in different parts of the world.
For some of those youths born in Somalia, it would be important to live in a Muslim country, and they dream of returning to their homeland.
The qualitative survey interviewed 15-21-year-olds of Estonian, Russian, and Somali backgrounds living in Finland, and compared the results with a reference group of Finnish young adults of the same age.
