Somali women participating in leadership positions, dev’t activities

Addis Ababa, November 28 (WIC) – Some women serving in various leadership positions in Somali state said the participation of women in leadership positions and benefit from development activities is growing.

Women in the state are making use of the favorable situation created by the country’s constitution to organize themselves in development, democracy building and good governance sectors.   

Somali State Disaster Prevention and Preparedness Department Head, Halima Ibrahim told WIC that women in the state had previously no right to organize, express themselves openly and take part in leadership positions.   

They are currently making use of their constitutional rights to ensure their all round rights and benefits through organizing themselves in various associations.  

Being assisted by the government, various women organizations established in the state are also benefiting the women from health and other development activities.   

Alkere Woreda women’s Affairs bureau head, Sofia Haji said on her part that the women in the state are engaging in agriculture, tailoring and other development sectors utilizing various loans services.  

According to the head, the government’s efforts to widely engage women in the health extension package is motivating others to engage in development activities and take part in decision making positions.

West Ime zone health bureau head, Bertukan Haji also said joint efforts are underway to engage women in various development sectors and ensure their rights in collaboration with women's affairs bureaus at all levels.
