The governor of Taiz province Hamoud Assoufi and the Deputy-Representative of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Nabeel Othman have held a meeting to discuss the situation of Somali refugees in the province. Assoufi and Othman also reviewed the difficulties the governorate faces in providing support to Somali refugees, as well as the possibility of preparing a report on the situation and needs of the Somali refugees in Taiz. Affirming the necessity of dealing with the problems of the Somalis living in the country, Assoufi highlighted UNHCR efforts to help Yemen address the challenges of receiving the Somali refugees, and support security forces in guarding the Karaz refugee camp.
“Yemen faces several challenges through the increasing of the number of refugees and scanty of the country’s resources,” Assoufi said, calling for more support from the international community to assist refugees. Nearly 140000 Somali refugees have been registered by the UNHCR in Yemen, while a huge number are hiding among the community.
