Four Somali men were arrested during a sting operation at Cape Town International Airport, police said on Monday.

National spokesperson Captain Dennis Adriao said the men, allegedly part of a syndicate, tried to bribe a police constable with R30 000.

The constable would have had to recruit airline and immigration personnel to facilitate the passage of the syndicate's members onto aircraft.

The officer informed his superiors about the money he had been offered and Cape Town airport police, crime intelligence police and organised crime police started a covert sting operation.

The sting operation took place last month, on January 9, but information had been kept from the public due to the sensitive nature of the operation, Adriao said.

Two of the suspects, aged 19 and 22, appeared before the Bellville Magistrate's Court on Monday on a charge of fraud.
