Dear Friends,
On September 16, 1991, the Attorney General published a Notice in the Federal Register designating
Somalia for Temporary Protective Status (TPS) due to extraordinary and temporary conditions resulting from an ongoing armed conflict. The Attorney General extended this TPS designation annually, determining in each instance that the conditions warranting such designation continued to be met. On September 4, 2001, the Attorney General re-designated
Somalia based upon extraordinary and temporary conditions resulting from the armed conflict and lack of functioning state institutions. Since that date, the Attorney General or Secretary of The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has extended
Somalia's TPS designation annually, determining in each instance that the conditions warranting such designation continued to be met. The most recent extension became effective on May 12
th 2008 and is due to expire on September 17
th 2009.
We believe the Somalia conflict is no longer a temporary condition and thus there is a need for Somalis to be adjudicated for a path to Citizenship. A movement of hope for Somalis with TPS in United States has started and we are asking everyone with TPS to participate. Currently there are about 300 individuals who have been approved for TPS (USCIS data). The current law does not allow the TPS status to be adjudicated towards a path to citizenship. We believe we can push for a bill to pave way for a path to citizenship for Somalia TPS holders. We would like to be contacted by these individuals by emailing us at [email protected]. Tell us what you do, where you live and how a path to citizenship will positively affect your family. We can use your information to request the bill to be co-sponsored or supported by your State’s Senators too.
We will submit our recommendations to Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) to be introduced in a bill at the congress. She is also the co-sponsor of the current Immigration bill in Senate introduced by Senator Harry Reid (D-NV).
Please feel free to contact us with your comments and support. You can also visit us at www.myspace.com/SomaliaTPS2Citizenship.
Cordially,
Hassanen Mohamed
