KOTA BAHARU (Bernama) -- A crewman from the MT Bunga Melati 5, who was captured by a group of pirates along with some 40 others in the Gulf of Aden near Somalia, revealed that they now faced starvation following an exhausted food supply.Khatijah Yusoff, 53, said his son Mohd Nazri Mat Salleh, 22, had contacted her by phone yesterday to inform her that they almost run out of food and that they needed additional supply immediately.
"He told me to inform his colleagues -- if they called -- and ask for them to send food supply," she said when met at her home in Kampung Kerasak Limbat, here today.
In the incident on Aug 29, MT Bunga Melati 5, with 41-crew members comprising 36 Malaysians and five Filipinos, was hijacked by pirates while heading towards Singapore from Yanbu, Saudi Arabia.
The incident was the second in 10 days after a group of 39 crewmen from MT Bunga Melati Dua were captured on the coast of the Somalia Beach on Aug 19.
Khatijah said besides asking for food, her son also asked for the family to perform hajat prayers for the safety of the crewmen so that they could return home soon.
"He also said that the crewmen were healthy and well," she said.
