Libyan Mohamed Yusuf, a Somali businessman who owns most of the commodities on board, confirmed to journalists that Puntland’s security forces freed the vessel on Tuesday.
“The operation to free the vessel went on successfully with no human casualties,” the businessman saidin a press conference in the port city of Bosasso about 1505km northeast of Mogadishu.
“It was sailing from India to the northern port city of Berbera in the break away republic of Somaliland,” he added.
He did not however disclose the name of the vessel and the nationalities of crew on board.
Puntland troops freed a first ship from Somali buccaneers ast Tuesday in what was called an “anti-piracy” operation off the coast of Somalia’s semiautonomous region.
Meanwhile, east African maritime official Andrew Mwangura revealed on Tuesday that mali buccaneers have hijacked an Indian vessel with 13 crewmen
East African Seafarers’ Assistance Program officer Andrew Mwangura said that the vessel carrying cargo was sailing from Asia to Somalia and is thought to have been abducted by Somali buccaneers during the weekend.
