MOGADISHU (AFP) - A regional governor in Somalia's breakway Puntland region said Sunday they had made contact with the abductors of four journalists, including a Briton and a Spaniard.

Bossaso Governor Musa Gueleh Yusuf said they were "trying to have them released as soon as possible."

"The kidnappers are asking for a ransom, but we refuse negotiations. We just want them to be released," Gueleh said without elaborating.

"We are not giving ransom. If they don't release them we will attack them."

The journalists were abducted Wednesday in Puntland's economic capital Bossaso, where they had gone to investigate piracy off the dangerous Somali coast.

No one has claimed responsibility for the kidnapping, but Gueleh has said authorities suspect two Somali journalists who were taken along with the foreigners of having been involved.
