Heavily armed Somali pirates have seized a freighter in the Gulf of Aden and taken the 23-man Filipino crew hostage.This year alone, pirates have hijacked dozens of ships off the coast of Somalia to obtain ransom for the abducted crew members. Twelve ships and over 200 people are still in the hands of the pirates.
Ten EU countries, including the Netherlands, are sending navy frigates to protect cargo ships in the busy shipping lane.
