The meeting, organized by Somali businessmen, was to be held at a police station in the Hodon district of the capital, Mogadishu, on Tuesday.
More than 300 gunmen armed with bazookas surrounded the station and opened fire, killing at least 16 officers and injuring another 38, a police officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Press TV.
The sponsoring businessmen seemed unaware that the meeting was a set up for an ambush attack.
The source said some high-ranking officers were seriously injured in the attack, and were receiving treatment at a hospital in the international airport of Adan Adde.
It was not clear how many insurgents were killed in the clashes.
