Mogadishu, Somalia (HOL) - Leaflets warning traditional elders of Hiiraan region have been scattered in several public places in the city of Beledweyne. Traditional elders of the region have been holding talks recently with senior Ethiopian military officers whose troops are stationed at Jante-kundisho military base near the city of Beledweyne. In the leaflets, the name of the chairman of the traditional elders of the region Mr. Da’ar Hersi Hoshow was mentioned and the elders were warned against continuing the secret talks they have been holding with the colonial forces who have invaded the country, as the memo put it, and that if the elders insist on continuing the talks, they will face death as their punishment.
“The people of Hiiraan region are our witnesses that the traditional elders of the region have received the warning” said the statement which looked as it was written last night.
When HOL contacted the chairman of the traditional elders of Hiiraan region Mr. Hoshow whose name appeared in the memo said that he received the warning but will only issue a response after he meets the region’s traditional elders who will be holding their meeting later today.
People in the region are worried about the consequences of this warning memo for the region’s traditional elders who have been working very hard in recent days in preventing a war that takes place inside the city between Union of Islamic Courts (UIC) forces and Ethiopian forces. The big question now is if communication between Ethiopian military commanders and the region’s traditional elders ceases, what would happen next.
