POLICE have arrested three more suspects in connection with the killing and torching of two Somali nationals at their shop in Duncan Village this month.

The arrests on Saturday bring to seven the number of people arrested in connection with the gruesome killing.

The suspects are expected to appear in the East London Magistrates Court today on charges of armed robbery, arson, murder and possession of stolen property as well as an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Police spokesperson Captain Stephen Marais said the police received a tip-off that guns allegedly used to shoot the Somalis were kept in a house in Reeston.

They followed up on the leads, and raided the house, where they found the guns.

Police later arrested the three in Duncan Village and two more suspects are expected to be arrested soon, police said yesterday.

Khalif Jama and Badal Sheik Mohamed were in their Duncan Village shop, in Sandile Street, when they were shot and set alight on January 6.

lPolice and the community policing forum in the area launched a visibility operation which was aimed at schools during the first week of the school year.

This was done to protect pupils from criminals who took their money while they were in the school premises or on their way to school, said Marais.

Mzokhanyo High School principal Mxolisi Zweni said the patrols and better police visibility around the school had helped them a lot because there were only pupils on the school premises, unlike before.

There have been no reports of robberies in our school since school opened, whereas in the past we had many such reports, said Zweni.

Masakhe Primary School deputy principal Buyiswa Ngxoweni echoed Zweni's sentiments, saying police visibility had helped people feel safe in their schools.

We no longer fear being mugged of our handbags or jewellery and phones; we feel safe, said Ngxoweni.
