Two foreign aid workers released by armed kidnappers in Somalia arrived unharmed at Madrid's Torrejon air base late Thursday.

Spanish doctor Mercedes Garcia and Argentine nurse Pilar Bauza Moreno were seized Dec. 26 by six gunmen while driving to a center where aid group Doctors Without Borders treats children with malnutrition.

They were released after a week's captivity. The pair were seized in Puntland, a semiautonomous region in northeastern Somalia known as a hub for human traffickers running boats into Yemen and a source of marine piracy.

Spain's Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos greeted the women on the tarmac.
