Wednesday December 31, 2008 (HOL) - Ethiopian troops arrested the former Mayor of Mogadishu Mr. Mohamed Omar Habeb (Mohamed Dhere). Mohamed Dhere fled his residence in northern Mogadishu yesterday after learning that Ethiopian troops were on their way to his residence to arrest him.

At the time of his arrest, the former Mayor was at house in the area of KM4 in the district of Hodan in Mogadishu and was accompanied by one of his deputies Mr. Ahmed Tahliil Warsame.

It is not clear yet as to why Ethiopian troops arrested the former Mayor although his arrest comes a day after Ethiopian troops searched his residence in northern Mogadishu and but failed to capture him. It is not yet known where Ethiopian troops are holding him at the moment although it is expected that such news may come out in the coming hours.

The former Mayor was removed from his post as Mayor of Mogadishu by the interim Prime Minister Mr. Nur Hassan Hussein (Nur Ade) few months ago but was immediately opposed by the former interim President Mr. Abdullahi Yusuf. His removal from office led to disagreements in the Federal Transitional Government which broke into two wings, each supporting either the interim Prime Minister or the former interim President who resigned from his post on Monday.
