SANAA (AFP) — Yemen on Saturday was probing reports that an unidentified yacht may have fallen into the hands of pirates in the Gulf of Aden, between Yemen and Somalia, the interior ministry said.

The coastguard began searching for the boat on Friday night after receiving reports that pirates may have taken over the yacht, a statement on the ministry's website said.

It did not specify the nationality of the yacht nor say how many people were aboard the boat.

The waters off Somalia, which has not had an effective central government for more than 17 years, are considered to be among the most dangerous in the world for shipping. Last year pirates attacked more than 25 ships in the area.

Somali officials on Saturday announced that two Germans kidnapped by pirates off Somalia more than six weeks ago had been freed and were on their way home.

The pair were sailing their yacht through the Gulf of Aden when they were seized by pirates on June 23.
