Nairobi (Daily Nation) - Schools from North Eastern Province are back with a bang at the schools and colleges drama festival.

The province, which has missed recent festivals, is presenting entertaining pieces at the festival taking place at the Menengai High School and Lohana Hall in Nakuru.

Mandera Arid Zone primary school impressed with a Somali dance on the rights of women.

The performers sang with feeling and danced well.

Fatuna Ali carried the dance till the end. The dance, which depicted some of the problems facing the country after post-election violence, was choreographed by teacher Arta Birik and Nasir Ali Sheik.

'Agonies untold'

Another interesting piece was a poem by 13-year-old Nasra Mohamed Noor of Mandera Boys Town primary school. The verse was entitled The Agonies Untold. The school will also present a play produced by Ibrahim Omar.

Schools have been battling for top honours since the festival started early this week.

Kakamega High School's play Apparitions, by Oliver Minishi, is among the best presented so far judging by the quality of acting and the themes of political violence and Aids tackled. This is a long story condensed in 40 minutes using a new technique. The actors do various moves and at the same time propel the play to move forward.

Other activities lined up for the rest of the week include a narrative by Miwani Secondary School from Nyanza and a choral verse by St Deborah Girls Secondary School from Nairobi.
