Mthatha (sapa) - One Somali shop-owner was shot dead and another was in a critical condition after an unknown number of men opened fire on them near Mthatha in the Eastern Cape, police said on Saturday.

Superintendent Mzukisi Fatyela said the two men were in their shop in Link near Mthatha when an unknown number of men entered and shot at them on Friday.

One man, aged 25, was shot in the head and died on the scene and the other, aged 27, was shot in the body and sustained severe injuries.

He was taken to the Nelson Mandela Academic hospital in a critical but stable condition, Fatyela said.

Nothing was taken from the shop.

Police were investigating the motive for the shooting.

Asked whether the incident was related to xenophobia, Satyela said it was not likely.

"We do not have such cases. We have never had cases of xenophobia here in Mthatha in the past," he said.

Cases of murder and attempted murder were under investigation.
