KUWAIT CITY (AFP) - The prime ministers of Kuwait and Ethiopia on Saturday called for the unity and independence of war-torn Somalia to be protected and for an end to the violence, a Kuwaiti official said.

The official KUNA news agency quoted an official source as saying the two leaders emphasised the need to resolve disputes between African nations through peaceful means.

The call was issued after a round of talks between visiting Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi and his Kuwaiti counterpart Sheikh Nasser Mohammed al-Ahmad al-Sabah.

Ethiopian forces have been battling Islamist fighters and clan militia since the start of the year when they backed Somali government soldiers to oust the Islamist movement from the capital and south and central Somalia.

Kuwait City and Addis Ababa also agreed to boost bilateral cooperation in fighting terrorism, the official said.

Zenawi, who arrived in oil-rich Kuwait earlier Saturday on a two-day visit, said he would sign three agreements in tourism and culture, and his talks would focus on boosting economic ties.

The Kuwaiti premier said ties with Addis Ababa were strong and historical, recalling Ethiopia's support for the Gulf state during the 1990 Iraqi invasion.
