Two persons were killed as a boat carrying illegal immigrants sank in the Aegean Sea on Sunday, Turkey's semi-official Anatolia news agency reported.

The boat sank off the popular Turkish resort town of Kusadasi in the western province of Aydin, killing two immigrants, said the report.

There were 13 immigrants of Somalian descent aboard the boat which was on its way from Kusadasi to Samos island of Greece, said the report, adding that Turkish coast guard teams rescued two immigrants.

Search-and-rescue efforts are still under way to find nine missing immigrants, according to the report.

Turkey is one of the major routes for illegal immigrants from Asia and the Middle East trying to reach Europe.
