Former Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo returned to Mogadishu this month after 16 months to participate in ongoing debates on constitutional amendments.

Shane L. Dixon has been meeting with Somali politicians over the last week. Last week, he met with the Minister of Defense, Abdukhadir Noor, during which they discussed the efforts of the Somali army forces in the war against al-Shabab, the implementation of the Somalia Security Development Plan, and the ATMIS Security Transfer Plan.

Last month, the United States and Somalia signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to construct up to five military bases for the Somalia National Army (SNA) Danab Brigade, valued at over $100 million.

In 2017, the United States and Somalia reached an agreement to recruit, train, equip, and mentor 3,000 men and women from across Somalia to build an enduring light infantry capability within the larger SNA. Since its creation, the Danab Brigade has demonstrated its capacity to engage al-Shabaab as a quick reaction strike force in battle and has maintained a clan-neutral character.
