MOGADISHU -- The UN top envoy for Somalia on Wednesday said increased terrorism attacks in the Horn of Africa nation will not derail efforts to stabilize the country.

Condemning the Wednesday terror attack targeting diplomats from United Arab Emirates in Mogadishu, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Somalia (SRSG), Nicholas Kay said such attacks won't disrupt ongoing state building in the country.

"I condemn today's appalling attack against innocent civilians and dedicated international officials who are providing critical peace-building and state building support to Somalia," Kay said in a statement issued in Mogadishu.

"The attack is an attempt to deter and undermine those from the international community working with Somalis to build a better Somalia. These terrorists will not achieve that objective," he added.

Kay offered his sincere condolences to the family and friends of all those who have suffered, as well as to the government of the UAE.

He reiterated the "UN's unfaltering commitment" to fighting the scourge of terrorism and supporting Somalia and the region to ensure security and stability.

Somali militant group Al-Shabaab earlier on the day conducted the roadside suicide attack in Mogadishu, killing 14 people and injuring 5 others.
