TORONTO (HOL) ----For the teams tussling for the Somali Week football tournament semifinal, the competition gets tight as the knock out stage already commenced, putting some teams in delicate positions while others had to pack bags to home.The tournament which has drawn huge local audiences in Toronto has now progressed to the semifinal after TMT beat Ottawa Starts on penalty shootouts after match ended in 1-1 draw. TMT will face Winsor which also beat Hilaac on penalties after they finished 1-1 draw.
The third place semifinal match would have Xidigaha clash Benadir on Friday.
Launched in 1990, the popular Somali Week tournament usually brings together older Somali football stars in Canada and attracts staggering number of fans who pack stadiums to cheer on tournament’s matches.
The players often travel from different countries in Europe and America to attend the annual tournament aimed at showing unity among Somali communities who fled their country during the two year-old civil war.
