FRANKFURT—German police on Saturday arrested two men suspected of being members of the Somali terror organization al-Shabaab when they arrived at Frankfurt airport, the German attorney general's office said Sunday.

The suspects, one identified as a German national and the other as a dual German-Tunisian citizen, were arrested in Kenya in late August and then deported on Saturday to Germany where the Federal Criminal Agency arrested them upon their arrival, the German attorney general's office said in a statement. The two allegedly traveled to Somalia in 2012 where they joined the group and received weapons training, the attorney general's office said.

"The accused are strongly suspected of having received training in fire arms and hand grenades and to have subsequently taken part in operations [organized] by the terror organization," the attorney general's office said, referring to attacks that have already taken place.

The suspects were identified as 30-year old German-Tunisian Mounir T. and 22-year old German Abdiwahid W. The legal representation of the men couldn't immediately be contacted to comment.

The Federal High Court had issued an arrest warrant, the attorney general's office said.

Earlier in September, German police arrested three German nationals at Frankfurt airport also suspected of being al-Shabaab members.
